The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has closed a company at Al Wakrah for a month over sale of electrical appliances which had false country of origin labels.
The counterfeit products seized include light switches and air conditioner connectors falsely advertised as manufactured in the UK, but actually made in China.
The closure comes following inspection campaigns carried out by the MEC in an effort to monitor commercial activity in Qatar. The ministry wants to prevent price manipulation and expose violations pertaining to counterfeit goods and non-conformity with standard specifications.
Inspectors from the ministry fined the company and enforced its closure in line with article 7 of law number 8 of 2008 on consumer protection. The law stipulates that suppliers of goods shall clearly display on product labels a clear description of goods and their ingredients and refrain from posting any misleading or false statements.
The administrative closure is to be published on the ministry's website as well as two daily newspapers at the offending company’s expense in line with article no 3 of the law.
