Italian champions Juventus look to summon up all their grit and focus when they visit Bayern Munich, who hold the upper hand in the battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
After an intense 2-2 draw in Turin, the two sides also look level on injuries. The German champions have defenders Jerome Boateng and Holger Badstuber sidelined as in the first leg, while Javi Martinez, another defender, is likely not yet ready to return.
Juve this week added their top scorer Paulo Dybala and key midfielder Claudio Marchisio to their injured list, joining defenders Giorgio Chiellini and Martin Caceres.
Bianconeri boss Massimiliano Allegri, who has counted about 45 injuries since the start of the season, has doubts also about ex-Bayern striker Mario Mandzukic, which would leave Alvaro Morata and newcomer Simone Zaza as the only options up front.
Dybala netted his first goal in the tournament against the Germans on February 23, for a total of 18 in his first season at Juve, and will see from the stands of the Allianz Arena if his tactical forecast for the game proves right.
“We need to keep calm knowing that it will be tough, but that we can get through by playing as we did for the final half-hour of the first leg and taking full advantage of the chances that come our way,” he said.
The Argentine struck after Thomas Mueller and Arjen Robben put the German champions two goals up and substitute Stefano Sturaro then levelled 14 minutes from time to keep hopes alive for the return match.
“We’ll look to get in their faces and not give them too much space, as Bayern have the ability to force you back,” Dybala said. “If you watch their Bundesliga matches you can see that they often push all 10 of their outfield players into the final third.
“The flip side is that they essentially play with four forwards and so leave some room in behind.
“We need to attack that space and cause them as much damage on the counter-attack as possible, because if you let them settle into their stride they’ll score sooner or later. We’ve the right conviction and self-belief to test our mettle in matches like these.”
Not wasting chances is Juve’s focus as they need a win or a 3-3 draw to progress, while a 2-2 draw would lead to a penalty shootout.
Bayern are set on again imposing their possession - 64 per cent in Turin where they prevailed also on shots, 14-12. But Juve fired seven times on target, two more than the Germans.
An acknowledgement of Juve’s chances came from Morocco defender Medhi Benatia, who moved to Bayern in 2014 after four season in Italy.
“Juve are always hard to beat,” Benatia told Rai Sport. “I recall a game against them, it was [2014] my year with Roma, and it looked like we were going to beat them, but in the end we lost 3-0, with nine players left. This means that Juve can play well, but their peculiarity is that they can also win if they play an average game.”
Defender Leonardo Bonucci displayed confidence, while admitting to Juve’s bad initial approach in the home leg.
“It will be a tremendous battle and we go to Munich full of enthusiasm and determination to reach the next round,” Bonucci said.
