The New England Patriots have traded top pass-rusher Chandler Jones to the Arizona Cardinals for guard Jonathan Cooper and a second-round selection in April’s NFL draft.
The teams confirmed the deal on Tuesday, saying it would become official once both players pass medical exams.
Jones was a first-round pick in 2012 and led the Patriots with 12.5 quarterback sacks last season.
In the off week between the final regular-season game and the first playoff game for the Patriots in January, Jones was hospitalized when he was found kneeling in front of a police station asking for help.
The defensive end admitted he made a mistake but would not confirm reports he used synthetic marijuana, which is legal in Massachusetts.
Cooper was the seventh overall pick in the 2013, but has started just 11 games in three seasons.
He spent his rookie year on injured reserve with a broken leg and was never able to impress Cardinals coach Bruce Arians.
The inclusion of a draft pick in the deal helps the Patriots compensate for losing their first-round selection this year. It was stripped by the NFL as part of their punishment for the “deflate-gate” under-inflated football scandal.
