Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam has praised the Qatari efforts to save Lebanon, saying that Lebanon was facing collapse in 2008 but was saved thanks to the Doha Agreement.
Speaking to Qatari Arabic daily Al Sharq, Salam stressed that the Lebanese government seeks Qatar and the GCC’s assistance in electing a new president of the Lebanese Republic.
“Lebanon is keen on the best of relations with GCC member-states and the Arab consensus”, he said referring to the consensus achieved in Beirut in 2002 during the Arab Summit, which launched the Arab Peace Initiative approved by all Arab States.
He stressed confidence that the GCC member-states will not ‘abandon’ Lebanon, adding that “It is our duty to go to our brothers in GCC member-states and recognise the mistakes.”
In 1989 Lebanon was facing collapse and it was rescued by the Taif Agreement thanks to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and in 2008 it also was going to collapse and was saved thanks to the Doha Agreement, he added.
