With hot-shot Stephen Curry continuing to carry the offensive load, the Golden State Warriors are showing no signs of slowing down, especially at home.
Reigning league MVP Curry poured in 34 points with eight triples before sitting out the fourth quarter, and the Warriors routed the New York Knicks 121-85 on Wednesday, extending their regular-season record home winning streak to 50 - 32-0 this season at Oracle Arena.
“It’s special and we just continue to add to the pot,” Curry said. “We want to take advantage of our home court and the winning edge we’ve developed here.”
The Warriors became the first team in the four major US professional sports to win 50 in a row but it doesn’t seem to be on their minds.
“I don’t think any of us are thinking about numbers or focusing on anything but the game itself and how we can get better,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said.
“That’s one of the reasons I think we’re having such a good season.”
Klay Thompson tossed in 19 points, reserve Marresse Speights had 11 while Draymond Green finished with six along with 11 rebounds and 10 assists, as the Warriors hit 18-of-37 triples in the romp.
The defending NBA Champs (61-6) are chasing history and need to win 12 of their last 15 games to break the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ all-time record of 72-10.
“I thought that record was unbreakable,” said Kerr, who played on that Bulls squad. “The last 20 years I never thought anybody would come close.
“We still might not because there are 15 games to go and things can happen. But the fact that we’re here and we’re even talking about it is a testament to our competitive desire. They hate losing.”
The Warriors led 31-19 after the opening quarter before extending it to 62-46 at halftime, with the league’s top scorer Curry pouring in 21 points, including five 3-pointers.
Curry added 13 points with three more triples, including the last two to close the third quarter, as the Warriors carried a 97-64 cushion into the fourth frame and coasted home.
“It was a complete 48-minute effort,” Curry said. Carmelo Anthony scored 18 points for the sliding Knicks (28-41), who have dropped 19 of their last 25 decisions.
