GCC Traffic Week promotes safe driving

The 32nd GCC Traffic Week, which concludes today at Darb Al Saai, has been attracting a good turnout of visitors since its opening last Sunday.
The programme focuses on enhancing public awareness on traffic safety. This year’s edition has adopted the same motto of last year’s: “Your decision determines your destiny” with participation of around 60 government and non-government entities, each featuring  activities to promote safe driving practices and road use.
The Traffic Department has a traffic awareness village, where visitors get tips on safe road use and driving practices, especially when driving quad bikes on sand dunes. Children can drive one on a sand track under the supervision of traffic personnel.
Many participating entities have scheduled a number of activities to teach children the importance of following the rules of safety when using the road or sitting in a vehicle, including the proper use of seat belts and child seats. There are colouring activities, face painting, kids play areas and live shows.
Visitors can also enjoy the exhibitions of vintage vehicles and horse riding, in addition to  various stalls selling fresh and hot food, perfumes, gifts and varieties of festive clothes.
Dallah Driving Academy gives visitors an opportunity for a brief driving test under the supervision of a driving instructor to assess their driving tests. Mustang Qatar Club have lined up some of their sport cars for a show. Mubarak Ghanim and Abdulla Jakir, members of the club, said the traffic week was a good opportunity to promote safe driving habits among the youths.
“We aim to help raise people’s awareness that public roads are not the right place for racing,” stressed Ghanim.
The GCC Traffic Week is an annual event held in all the member countries concurrently, with traffic officers from each country visiting the others to exchange experiences in the field and discuss related issues.
