Hamad Trauma Centre hosts delegations for GCC Traffic Week

The Hamad Trauma Centre (HTC) at Hamad General Hospital has hosted visiting delegations, comprising directors and officers from different departments of the Ministries of Interior from GCC countries, in Qatar for the 32nd GCC Traffic Week.

The GCC Traffic Week is an annual event organised by the Traffic Department, Ministry of Interior (MoI), under the National Committee on Traffic Safety (NCTS).

The event is designed to build a bridge of co-operation between different traffic authorities and civic organisations in the GCC to work together towards reducing deaths on the road and improving road safety in the region.

According to Dr Hassan al-Thani, head of trauma centre at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), some of the most important work for road safety must be done outside of the emergency and operating rooms of the HTC.

“Therefore, sharing the lessons we have learned as we build our national trauma system and stronger partnerships with governmental and non-governmental agencies, are important steps as we continue to align our efforts to improve road safety in Qatar with those of the NCTS and other partners in the GCC,” he said. “This is the fifth year that the HTC has hosted the delegations participating in the GCC Traffic Week.”

In line with the theme of this year’s GCC Traffic Week, “Your Decision Determines your Fate”, he further emphasised that road safety was both a personal and a family commitment.

To ensure that even the youngest road users are safer as they grow up to become responsible adult drivers and passengers, he made the following recommendations: serve as a role model by always using a seatbelt on every trip one takes in a car/vehicle; observe the school zone speed limit of 30km per hour when driving around schools; transport children, under the age of 10 years, in the back row of a vehicle and restrain them using the appropriate car seats or restraint systems; refrain from driving when impaired by fatigue or medications; and avoid using any form of mobile phone, electronic devices or serious distractions while driving.
