Austrian folk team enthralls Katara with traditional performance

Austrian group ‘Wachauer Folkstanzgruppe’ has enthralled a large number of visitors at Katara – the Cultural Village esplanade with their traditional folk performance recently.

Performers also used a number of traditional Austrian musical instruments such as accordions, flutes, and guitars, among others during the show, jointly organised by the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) office in Doha and Katara.

Speaking on the occasion, Austrian embassy in Doha charge d’affaires Sieglinde Fedele said: “We are pleased to have Austria presenting here a great initiative between Unesco and Katara, it is an opportunity to bring the world to Qatar.”

Wachauer Folkstanzgruppe has been performing and joining parades at various international folk festivals in many countries including Germany, Belgium, Slovakia, Estonia, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, China, Australia, Mexico, Italy, Hungary, Switzerland, USA, Canada, and Macedonia.

The group came from the Austrian region “Wachau,” which was included in Unesco’s World Heritage list since 2001.

Located about 880km west of Austria’s capital city, Vienna, their hometown Kerms-Stein is more than 1,000 years old. It is popular with its old lanes, houses, churches, abbeys, and especially the river Danube and the vineyard terraces.

Cultural diversity festival will continue to amuse Katara visitors in May with the participation of more than 20 countries from all over the world who will showcase their traditions and heritage.
