CMC pushes for ban on male sales staff at women's clothes shops

Sales staff at shops selling women's clothes in Qatar should be women only, members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) demanded at their bi-weekly regular session.

Women's concerns over the embarrassment they experience while buying clothes – especially undergarments – when the sales staff are men, were highlighted.

CMC chairman Mohamed bin Hammoud al-Shafi raised the issue yesterday, stressing that the topic had been pending since 2006, and he requested a ministerial decision to ban men from working at women's clothes and accessories shops.

CMC member Sheikha al-Jufairi observed that the issue is particularly embarrassing when women have to deal with salesmen in the selection of under garments.

However, she was of the view that there is a shortage in women applicants for sales jobs.

CMC vice-chairman Hamad Lahadan al-Muhannadi pointed out that some other GCC countries have already enforced a ban on men from working as sales staff at women's clothes shop and said Qatar should follow this trend as part of the local traditions.

He said however that men can work as cashiers in such shops.

The issue was referred to the CMC Services and Utilities Committee for further discussion and consultation with officials of the relevant authorities to issue the necessary recommendations.

The council also discussed a suggestion to maintain an adequate number of lanes at the internal roads across the country to enhance traffic safety and flow.

The CMC complaints committee discussed a public demand to install more sports equipment at public gardens and parks, in particular at those in residential neighbourhoods.
