The Golden State Warriors were pushed but managed to pull out a victory and the run for the record books continues.
Reigning league MVP Stephen Curry scored six of his game-high 31 points in overtime, and the Warriors escaped with a 102-96 victory over the feisty Utah Jazz on Wednesday for a franchise-record 68th win of the season. “Nothing went our way for most of the night but they kept fighting and that’s why they have this incredible record,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of the league-best 68-7 mark. “I love our competitive spirit, their incredible display of competition and fight night after night.”
Klay Thompson tossed in 18 points, Harrison Barnes had 15 while Draymond Greeen finished with 13 for the Warriors, who outscored their guests 14-7 in the extra session for their 13th win in the last 14 games. “Coming into this building you know you’re in for a fight,” Green said. “We’re not one to make excuses. We didn’t have it but we did enough to get the win.”
The defending NBA champions need to win five of their final seven games to break 1995-96 Chicago Bulls’ all-time record of 72-10. “We need to play every game like it’s our last,” Thompson said. “At the same time, we can’t look at 72 or 73 wins, we need to live in the present.”
The Warriors trailed 82-74 midway through the fourth quarter but closed on a 15-7 run. Thompson’s 3-pointer, off a Shaun Livingston rebound squared it at 89-apiece with 15 seconds left. The Jazz had a chance to win it in regulation but Green blocked Mack’s shot.
“Klay hit the big shot to get us to overtime and Draymond made a great defensive stop,” Kerr said. Knotted at 93-apiece, Curry took over in overtime, with six quick points, giving the Warriors a 99-93 lead. After forcing Gordon Hayward into a turnover, Curry assisted on Green’s thunderous dunk to seal the win. Hayward had 21 points, and Rodney Hood added 20 for the Jazz (37-38), which fell into a seventh place tie with Houston and Dallas in the Western Conference play-off race. “Our guys competed their butts off,” Jazz coach Quin Snyder said. “We played so hard and played well. Give them credit. We gave them a second shot at it, and Klay Thompson knocks it down.”
