With games running out for them to catch leaders Leicester City, Tottenham’s push for the Premier League title moves up a notch this weekend as they travel to Liverpool tomorrow.
Victory would cut the gap to just two points but Spurs have lost on their last three visits to Anfield.
Teenage midfielder Dele Alli, whose performances have been at the heart of their improvement this season, said he hoped to carry over the form he showed for England in their win over Germany last weekend.
“There are only a few games left until the end of the season and it’s important now that we perform well again at Tottenham and we take how we played with England back to the club,” Alli told the team website.
Full-back Ben Davies told reporters this week that this is the time to prove they belong at the top.
“We have a big couple of games coming up now,” he said. “These games are where champions are made. It’s a big few weeks coming for us and we need to get points.
“The opportunity to be in a title race is not something every player gets. You just have to revel in, enjoy it and hopefully it all pays off in the end. Fighting for titles is exactly where I want to be.”
Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp is considering resting Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who is due to return from international duty in Paraguay only later on Thursday.
Leicester, meanwhile, host Southampton on Sunday, with leading goalscorer Jamie Vardy looking to continue his stunning season.
Vardy scored for England in both their 3-2 win in Germany and their 2-1 defeat by the Netherlands and is full of confidence going into the clash with Southampton.
“The (goals) can only be good for my confidence,” he said.
“We’ll be going back to training this week and coming off the back of these two goals, hopefully I’ll be scoring again at the weekend.”
Arsenal, 11 points behind Leicester but with a game in hand, have not given up hope and as they prepare to face Watford, defender Nacho Monreal believes they have the quality to go close.
“We’re aware that we don’t just depend on ourselves - that’s obvious,” he told Arsenal’s website.
“Right now we’re in third place. Even if we do win all eight games that doesn’t mean we’ll be champions, but what does depend on us is winning those eight games.
“We’re coming off the back of two really good performances, the most recent of which we won.
“We know it’s going to be difficult against Watford because we only played them recently and they knocked us out of the FA Cup, but we’re hungry for revenge.”
At the other end of the table, Aston Villa host Chelsea without a manager after manager Remi Garde left by mutual consent earlier in the week.
Second-bottom Newcastle United travel to fourth-bottom Norwich chasing points for survival, but will be without goalkeeper Rob Elliot, who suffered a knee injury on international duty.
Sunderland, one point better off than Newcastle, host West Brom while Crystal Palace, seven points above the drop zone but not out of trouble, are away to West Ham.
Manchester City travel to Bournemouth, Manchester United host Everton and Stoke meet Swansea in the weekend’s other matches.
