A Doha criminal court has sentenced a Bangladeshi man to seven years in jail and imposed a fine of QR200,000 for an illicit drug smuggling attempt.
Local Arabic daily Arrayah reported yesterday that the court also ordered his deportation upon completing his sentence.
When the defendant arrived at Hamad International Airport, the customs officers doubted his conduct and ordered a full search of his luggage. A kilo of marijuana was found in a bag.
However, the defendant claimed that the bag was given to him at his home country at the airport to be delivered to a person in Doha. He also told the investigators that because he trusted the person whom he gave the bag, he did not open it and took him for his word as containing clothes for the targeted person, who could not be traced by the investigators.
