The Blackhawks beat the Jets, 5-4, in overtime Friday in the first of six games without suspended defenseman Duncan Keith.
Brent Seabrook scored the winning goal 1 minute, 2 seconds into the extra period while Artemi Panarin scored two goals and added two assists to break out of his scoring slump.
Defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk, winger Andrew Shaw and captain Jonathan Toews all left the ice to head to the Hawks dressing room during the second period. The Hawks kept their lead at the end of the period after Patrick Kane broke a 2-2 tie with his 40th goal of the season. Van Riemsdyk and Toews returned but Shaw did not. It was unclear how Shaw suffered his injury, but his final shift ended with 15 minutes, 22 seconds remaining in the period.
The Hawks had a 2-1 lead after the first period thanks to goals from a pair of players who had not scored in a while. Panarin scored his 26th of the season on a power play to tie the score 1-1 after Nic Petan gave the Jets a 1-0 lead. Then Brandon Mashinter deflected in a shot from Teuvo Teravainen for his fourth goal of the season. It was Panarin’s first goal since March 9, Mashinter’s first goal since Feb. 15. Panarin’s goal was the first time the Hawks power play had scored in its last 26 attempts.
After Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien tied the score 3-3 in the third, Blake Wheeler scored his second goal of the night from in front of the net. It was Wheeler’s second goal and third point of the night. Panarin, however, would tie the score at 15:15 when he took a pass in front from Marcus Kruger and beat Ondrej Pavelec before Seabrook won it.
With Keith out, coach Joel Quenneville had to shuffle his defensive pairings. This is what they looked like at the start: Van Riemsdyk took Keith’s slot on the top defensive pairing with Niklas Hjalmarsson. Viktor Svedberg skated with Brent Seabrook while Erik Gustafsson was with Michal Rozsival. Christian Ehrhoff was a healthy scratch.
