The fish shortage being experienced in the local market is expected to last a few more days, according to shop owners.
Industry sources told Gulf Times that though there is a marginal improvement in the weather conditions, only few fishing vessels are out in the sea these days.
However, owing to the improving conditions more boats could venture out in the next 24 hours and it may contribute to better availability of fish after a couple of days.
Some of the wholesalers at the Doha Central Market said stocks at most shops plummeted in the last 24 hours as there were no fresh supplies in the last two days. As a result, there was also a big shortage of fish at major hypermarkets.
Owing to extremely high prices, business at the retail stalls was adversely hit. The situation was more or less the same at the stalls at the Central Market.
On Saturday, even an otherwise cheaper fish as Sheri sold for QR25/kilo at the main market. King fish prices ranged between QR80 and QR83/kilo, traders said. Small quantity of Hamour was available and priced between QR68 and QR70/kilo.
Even cheaper sardines from Saudi Arabia cost QR10/kilo on Sunday.
When contacted late in the evening on Sunday, wholesalers said the supply would improve only after two or three days.
