The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Qatar Section, which is chaired by Maersk Oil Qatar deputy managing director Sheikh Faisal al-Thani, held its latest technical meeting at Sheraton Doha recently.
The meeting topic was entitled “High definition surveys — better understanding of the reservoir”, and was presented by Ali al-Bunni, Drilling Survey specialist for Schlumberger Qatar.
Al-Bunni stated that wellbore surveying was a critical topic, which had a very high value, but that it did not always receive the attention that it deserves. His presentation described surveying best practices, and various surveying methods.
He highlighted that wellbore surveys are usually used during drilling for well target sizing and/or for wellbore collision avoidance, but showed examples of how high definition surveys can be used to improve reservoir mapping, particularly when used with the latest Logging While Drilling (LWD) technology for Reservoir Mapping While Drilling (RMWD).
Ultimately, this technology reduces uncertainty and leads to increased recovery from oil and gas fields.
Al-Bunni has a bachelors degree from Damascus University and started his career as a Measurement While Drilling (MWD) engineer, before specialising in Directional Drilling (DD) and wellbore surveying.
He joined the Schlumberger Qatar team in 2010 and is currently responsible for all wellbore surveying matters for Schlumberger’s clients in Qatar and Pakistan.
