Senyar Championship gets off to a rousing start

The fifth annual edition of Senyar Championship got off to a rousing start yesterday at Katara beach.
The traditional event will go on until April 9. As many as 806 sailors across 67 teams sailed in dhows to Fisht al Hadid area in Sealine.
Senyar Championship is divided into three major categories of Alafah (a traditional fishing method using a rod or line with a bait and practised from a boat), fishing and pearl diving.
The organising committee earlier checked all boats to ensure they have fulfilled all requirements including a licence for sailing for more than five days and another license from the Ministry of Transport and Communication is also required, besides meeting other logistic and supply requirements.
The 110-member committee has formed seven sub-committees, each comprising six members and responsible for 11 teams. The participating teams have been given seven different colours for easy identification.
Winners of the first and second positions in pearl diving will have the priority to represent Qatar in pearl diving competitions at the GCC level, as per terms introduced by the committee this year.
