Population rise spurs demand for exchange house in Umm Salal

Residents of Umm Salal feel it is high time money exchange agencies started operations in the town.

A steady rise in the area's population, backed by the ever-growing presence of workers' housing units, has spurred the demand for an exchange house in Umm Salal.

The residents argue that though there have been some major commercial developments in the municipal town of late, it lacks a money exchange facility and people have to travel to Doha to remit money.

"It will help us immensely if an exchange house is opened here," said one of the residents.

Sources said Umm Salal and its surrounding areas have at least 30 housing units meant for workers of construction companies. More than 35,000 people live in these units.

More companies are moving to Umm Salal as their operators feel the place is a relatively affordable option for workers' housing.

"In view of this growth in population, Umm Salal presents a good business opportunity for exchange houses. Also, the opening of an exchange facility will allow the residents to send money home in a convenient manner, without having to travel to Doha," said another resident.

Work on the Orbital Highway project has led to the setting up of a number of construction camps in Umm Salal over the past year, it is learnt. Other infrastructure projects are also under way in the area.

A number of industrial units are also coming up in the Umm Salal industrial area. In addition, a major labour city is also under construction on the outskirts of the town.

Taking into consideration the rapid pace of development in the town, Mowasalat recently increased the frequency of bus services between Doha and Umm Salal.
