Maersk joins SGMF board meeting

Maersk Maritime Technology, a part of the Maersk Group, has joined the Society for Gas as Marine Fuel (SGMF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established to promote safety and industry best practice in the use of gas as a marine fuel.
Paolo Tonon, head of Maersk Maritime Technology, joined the SGMF board meeting and the “Middle East Members Forum” for the first time in Doha, hosted by Nakilat (Qatar Gas Transport Company).
“Maersk Maritime Technology is the knowledge and competence centre for maritime technology within the Maersk Group, specialised in naval architecture, engines, propulsion, fuel, paint and chemicals, machinery and automation systems, hydrodynamics, and performance analytics, as well as regulatory affairs.
“Maersk Maritime Technology actively works with vessel owners in the Maersk Group on long-term radical innovation, new build projects, radical retrofit programmes, and new fuel technology assessments,” Tonon explained.
He said Maersk Maritime Technology has been working over the past years to explore opportunities related to the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) marine propulsion technology.
“We feel that it is important to take an active part in setting standards for LNG as marine fuel as we may become a user in the future,” he added.
Mark Bell, general manager for SGMF, said: “We are extremely pleased to welcome Maersk Maritime Technology to our network since the deep sea and container sector is, of course, extremely significant for the future development of LNG as marine fuel. The Maersk Group is one of the first large players from this segment to join our network.”
