The Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) has compelled a well-known car dealer to repair a car free of charge and announced it will take legal action against the dealer for refusing to fix the vehicle in line with the warranty terms.
The MEC took action after receiving a complaint from the vehicle’s owner through one of its communication channels concerning the car dealer’s refusal to repair the car.
The car dealer had claimed that the warranty does not cover the gear box because the owner of the vehicle violated the warranty terms by replacing the gear box oil with another kind of oil that fails to meet the technical requirements of the manufacturer.
Inspectors from the Consumer Protection and Combating Commercial Fraud Department investigated the complaint and determined that the car owner had not violated the technical requirements, concluding that the car dealer violated the warranty terms in line with article (9) of law No (8) of 2008 on consumer protection.
The law stipulates that dealers and suppliers shall comply with the warranty terms offered to costumers. The measures come within the framework of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to protect consumers and ensure that car dealers follow up on vehicle defects and repairs.
The MEC stressed that it will crack down on all violations of the Consumer Protection law and will intensify its inspection campaigns to combat fraud.
The MEC added that it will refer violators of applicable laws and ministerial decrees to the competent authorities who will in turn take appropriate action against them in a bid to protect the rights of consumers.
The MEC has urged all customers to report any violations to its Consumer Protection and Anti-Commercial Fraud Department through the following channels: Hotline: 16001, e-mail: info@mec.gov.qa, Twitter: @MEC_Qatar, Instagram: MEC_Qatar, MEC mobile app for Android and IOS: MEC_Qatar
