Muaither were crowned as Qatargas League champions for 2015-16 after they collected a total of 44 points, and also earned a promotion to the Qatar Stars League (QSL) next season.
Al Shahania claimed the second place after collecting a total point of 38, and will also be promoted to the QSL. Third place team for this edition was Al Markhiya after they won against Al Khor and increased their points tally to 36 points.
A crowning ceremony was held at Al Ahli Stadium following Muaither and Al Sailiya’s match in which Sheikh Khalid bin Abdullah al-Thani, chief operating officer - Engineering & Ventures at Qatargas, and Qatar Football Association (QFA) Executive Committee member Ahmed al-Buainain crowned Muaither, Al Shahania, and Al Markhiya as first, second and third respectively.
The Qatargas League this season witnessed strong battles amongst the clubs as they aimed to win the coveted title and be promoted to become first division clubs.
In its third edition, the Qatargas League saw participation of 18 clubs, 14 of which were reserve teams and four were second division teams. The league kicked off on September 20, 2015.
Commenting on the occasion, al-Buainain said: “We congratulate Muaither on winning the title of Qatargas League this year along with Al Shahania and Al Markhiya for securing second place and third place respectively. This season has been significant for Muaither and Al Shahania as they will be promoted to the Qatar Stars League (QSL) next season. The Qatargas League illustrates QFA’s objective to constantly have a direct impact on the development of first and second division clubs.”
He added: “We are delighted to organise this league alongside Qatargas and look forward to working with them on future joint projects that positively impact the development of football.”
Sheikh Khalid said: “We are pleased that the Qatargas League has now grown remarkably and contributed towards promoting and enhancing the game over the past two seasons, meeting our objectives in taking Qatar’s football to new heights, especially as the country is getting ready to host the World Cup in 2022. I thank the Qatar Football Association for providing us the opportunity to be part of the State of Qatar’s efforts to be one of the world’s leading sports destinations. Furthermore, we are delighted to partner with QFA to support this exciting league that brings together some of the most aspiring young footballers in Qatar.”
He noted that as the world’s premier LNG Company, Qatargas’ support to football is part of the company’ corporate social responsibility programme in the field of sports.
Qatargas and QFA’s three-year partnership started in 2013 where a deal was signed for Qatargas to become the name partner of the league. This agreement changed the name of the previously known ‘Q League’ to ‘Qatargas League’. The Qatargas League witnesses the participation of 18 reserve and second division teams.
