It rained heavily in parts of the country late evening, accompanied by thunder and strong winds.
There was waterlogging in some areas and many inhabitants put up images and videos of the thunderstorm online.
Rain and windy conditions were reported from different parts of Doha as well. The Qatar University weather station recorded 12.8mm of rain, according to an update from the Met department around 9.15pm.
In view of the prevailing conditions, the Met department urged people to exercise due caution. “Please be careful during thunder (and) rains, accompanied occasionally by strong winds, poor visibility and hail,” it said in a post on its social media channels.
The thundershowers were expected to continue overnight, with the chances of rain likely to weaken gradually by this morning, the weather office informed evening.
Earlier in the day, the Met department said in its forecast that strong winds were expected in some places on Friday along with a rise in temperature during the day.
Offshore areas, too, are likely to see strong winds and high seas, according to the weather report.
There might be scattered rain in some places in the early hours of the day. The wind speed may go up to 25 knots in some places, with the sea level rising to 8ft.
Partly cloudy conditions were also likely in both inshore and offshore areas today.
The minimum and maximum temperatures in the country on Friday are expected to be 22C and 33C, respectively, with the forecast for Doha being 24C and 32C.
