El Jaish took second place in the Qatar Stars League after a thrilling 2-2 draw with Al Sadd at the Qatar Sports Club Stadium. Al Rayyan had sealed the first spot weeks ago, leaving other teams to battle it out for lower placings.
Yesterday, Abderrazak Hamdallah opened the scoring for El Jaish in the thirteenth minute. The Moroccan striker received a cross at the edge of the box and then bulldozed his way through the Al Sadd defence before putting his shot away from inside the six-yard box. The goal takes Hamdallah’s tally to twenty one goals this season making him the top scorer in the QSL.
Al Sadd then made a quick comeback in the second half scoring two goals in quick succession. The equalising goal came from captain Xavi Hernandez in the 56th minute. Abdelkarim Hassan sent in a cross which Xavi slotted into the goal from a narrow angle as he slid into the six-yard box.
Just moments after the first goal, Baghdad Bounedjah gave Al Sadd the lead in the 75th minute. The Algerian striker received the ball outside the box dribbled it in, cut past a defender before sending it into the goal from in between two defenders. The powerful right footed swerving shot gave Khalifa Ababacar, El Jaish’s goal keeper, no chance.
In the seventy eighth minute El Jaish equalized through Lucas Mendes. The Brazilian defender was left unmarked during a corner kick and the ball fell to him just inside the box before he smashed it into the goal on a half volley.
The draw gave El Jaish 48 points after 26 matches, while Al Sadd finished third on 47.
