Title favourite Pankaj Advani scored his second successive victory after he beat Qatar’s Ali al-Obaidly in the Asian Snooker Championship yesterday.
Qatar’s Ahmed Saif trounced Sri Lanka’s Mohamed Shamil 4-0.
At the Qatar Billiards and Snooker Federation (QBSF) Academy, Advani beat al-Obaidly 4-0. The Indian ace won 75-24, 138-04, 133-00, 84-28, with breaks of 133, 111, 66 and 58.
Last year’s runner-up and top seed Advani had begun his campaign with a 4-0 win over Saudi Arabia’s Sulaiman Almisfer on the opening day of the event. Advani - the only player in the world to win world titles in all formats of both, Billiards and Snooker, was runner-up in Doha last year.
Meanwhile, Qatar’s Ahmed Saif also registered his second win on the trot. The 33-year-old Saif trounced Mohamed Shamil of Sri Lanka 4-0 (61-50, 73-08, 69-04, 90-06).
Qatar’s Bashar Abdulmajeed, who had lost his opening league match on Saturday, bounced back to register his first victory. Abdulmajeed edged past Lim Chun Kiat of Singapore 4-3 (22-61, 19-74, 32-62, 56-55, 68-29, 57-47, 42-55).
However, the rest of the Qatari cueists – Mohsin al-Abdulrahman, Mohsen Bukshaisha, Mohana al-Obaidly, Khalid Alsalem and Abdulatif Alfawal – had a disappointing day, losing their respective matches.
Advani’s title challenger and former amateur world champion Mohamed Asif of Pakistan also won his second league match. Asif, the second seed, beat Qatar’s Abdulatif Alfawal 4-1. Asif had break of 89 in the first frame as he won 97-29, 79-40, 64-63, 25-79, 73-43.
The winner of the championship in Qatar will be eligible to play on the Pro Circuit. Last year, Hamza Akbar of Pakistan won the event, defeating Advani in the final, and is now part of the Pro Circuit.
The players have been divided into 12 groups for the preliminary rounds. All the league matches up to the pre-quarters stage will be best of 7 frames while the quarter-finals and the semi-finals will be best of 9 frames.
The final will be played on April 23 at 11am and will be a best of 11 frames affair.
The winner of the event will get $3,500 and the runner-up $1,750. The losing semi-finalists will collect $500 each. The organisers also have lined up cash awards for the highest break and maximum break.
The cueman with the highest break (over 100 pts) will pocket $500 and those with maximum break (above 147) is set to go home with $1,750. Today’s action begins at 10am and will end with 7pm matches.
