Qatargas has participated in the annual “Qatar Process Safety Symposium” held in Doha recently. The event, titled “Building Competency in Process Safety,” was co-hosted by Texas A&M Qatar (TAMUQ) and ConocoPhillips Qatar.
Ahmad Helal al-Mohannadi, Qatargas chief operating officer – Operations, delivered the plenary keynote address titled “Building an Organisational Process Safety Culture.” 
In the presentation, he outlined how Qatargas manages safety, and monitors safety performance. 
He also elaborated on Qatargas Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture and the various safety programmes and initiatives in place across Qatargas’ operations.
Also representing Qatargas at the event was Khalifa al-Sulaiti, Safety and Risk manager, who presented the “Safe Start 2016” video of Qatargas and shared some insights into the company’s safety journey. 
“Safe Start 2016 serves as a platform to recognise achievements and to line up the whole organisation toward the year’s safety focus areas, based on incidents analysis and trends.  
He said in 2016, Qatargas will continue to evolve personal and process safety, focusing on the “No One Gets Hurt” and “Keeping it Inside the Pipes” – efforts aimed at avoiding process safety incidents.  
“We have developed a dedicated task force to identify root causes behind Loss of Primary Containment (LOPC’s) and recommend enhancements to minimise all process safety events and continue to roll out campaigns that focus on safety themes where we can improve. 
Safety in Qatargas is not just a word or a commitment alone, it is translated into every action and appears in every task,” he added.
The two-day symposium allowed delegates from industry, regulatory institutions, and academia to hear about safety success stories, incident case studies, best practices, new legislative regimes, and recent advances of research on process safety. 
The symposium also provided networking opportunities, and brought together knowledge and expertise from distinguished speakers from around the globe.
Qatargas has an outstanding safety record as Qatargas 2 recently completed one year of operation without any recordable injury and the Laffan Refinery completed two years of operation without recordable injuries. Two major shutdowns were carried out in 2015 without recordable injuries and the Train 6 shutdown was completed safely and successfully in April 2016.
