Katara to host gems of Croatian cinema

For the first time ever in Qatar, the embassy of Croatia in co-operation with Katara Cultural Village, is presenting a showcase of Croatian movies at the Croatian Film Day.
To introduce the Qatari public to Croatian cinema, two films will be screened, both rated suitable for general public viewing, at Katara Drama Theatre on April 23.
The films are Koko and the Ghosts for younger viewers and Gnothi Seauton (Know Thyself) for adult viewers.
Young viewers will be treated to an amusing and lighthearted adventure as the intrepid hero Koko unravels a mystery. Realistic storyline and natural acting help viewers sympathise and identify while enjoying the movie. The screening will start at 4pm.
Gnothi Seauton deals in a matter-of-fact way with the most serious issues of life; love, dedication, persistence, hardship, reward and rejection. The film documents life’s incredible trials, tribulations and triumphs of an ordinary yet incredible family made of equally ordinary yet incredible individuals whose story ranks among the most incredible stories ever told in the sporting world.
When they started, the Kostelic family was unknown, not only in the skiing world, but unknown, period. When they finished, Janica Kostelic had become a world champion and the greatest female Olympic skier in history.
Her brother Ivica Kostelic became a world champion and the best slalom skier in the world over a decade. Although the fact that he can walk is a miracle in itself. Their father, Ante Kostelic, who was a world-class hand-ball player in his younger days, became one of the most respected skiing coaches in the world.
The Kostelic story is one of love and persistence triumphing over adversity. It is a story of vision and human endurance in pursuing a dream. It is a story made of fairy tale successes against all odds. The Kostelic story stirs emotions and grips the viewers charging them with strong positive feelings. It has a message for people of all nations, all creeds and all stations in life. Its power is its humanity.
The Bruno Kovacevic authored film starts with footage of an eight-year-old Janica Kostelic, and ends with behind-the-scenes clips of bother Ivica winning his 4th Olympic Games silver medal in Sochi in 2014. Coached by father Ante, Janica is considered one of the all-time skiing greats, winning four Olympic gold medals and five World Championship golds.
She is the only woman to win four gold medals in alpine skiing at the Winter Olympics (in 2002 and 2006), and the only woman to win three alpine skiing gold medals in one Olympics (2002).
Ivica also has had a successful career, winning four Olympic silver medals, and slalom World Cup titles in 2002 and 2011 and the combined World Cup title in 2011 and 2012.
The film has been shown at over 20 film festivals around the world, and was a candidate in the best documentary film category at the Oscars. The movie is a result of over 150 hours of material, shaped into a 93-minute documentary that ties together the journey and achievements of the Kostelic family. The story of Janica and Ivica moves its viewers and allows them to find the motivation to get to know themselves, their limits and their potentials.
Besides featuring skiing and sports in general, the movie showcases Zagreb, the beauty of Mljet, and Croatia in general. Film director Kovacevic, chose the proverb Gnothi Seauton, inscribed in the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, as the film title. This once-in-a-lifetime story of Croatian sports, is not only about skiing in a country where there is virtually no snow.
The story is about life, strength and passion for what you love and believe in. Double Oscar-winner Branko Lustig stood by Bruno Kovacevic, helping the story find its final form.
Gnothi Seauton just won the First Prize at the Houston Film Festival.
A reception will be held prior to the screening at Katara where the audience will get a chance to interact with the Producer/Director, Bruno Kovacevic.  The screening of the film will start at 8pm.
