Chicago Cubs’ Arrieta pitches second no-hitter of career

Jake Arrieta tossed the second no-hitter of his career and the 15th in Chicago Cubs history in a 16-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at the Major League Baseball games on Thursday.
Arrieta got Eugenio Suarez to fly out to right fielder Jason Heyward for the final out, and the celebration was on around the mound. Arrieta, who threw a no-hitter at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 30 last season, was greeted with hugs, high-fives and a Gatorade shower before exiting the field. Thursday’s result was never in doubt as Kris Bryant hit two of five Cubs home runs, including a grand slam. Bryant tied a career high with six RBIs.

Royals 4, Tigers 0
Edinson Volquez threw seven scoreless innings and Mike Moustakas homered as Kansas City blanked Detroit.
Volquez (3-0) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out five, lowering his ERA to 1.46. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth.
Kelvin Herrera and Danny Duffy retired the final six batters to preserve the shutout.

Orioles 3, Blue Jays 2
Manny Machado continued his early hot streak with two hits, the second a tiebreaking bloop double in the eighth inning that gave Baltimore a victory over Toronto.
Darren O’Day (1-0) got the win after throwing a scoreless eighth in which he struck out the side, and Zach Britton closed it for his fourth save.
Baltimore had come back from an early two-run deficit, missing several scoring opportunities before finally tying the game at 2-2 on a J.J. Hardy sacrifice fly in the seventh.

A’s 7, Yankees 3
Rich Hill struck out 10 in six innings and Oakland hit four home runs and to complete a three-game sweep of New York.
Hill (2-2) allowed two runs (one earned) and three hits but constantly kept the Yankees off-balance with his curveball and fastball. He turned in his 10th career double-digit strikeout game and second this season.
Mark Canha, Khris Davis and Coco Crisp hit solo homers for the A’s, and Chris Coghlan added a two-run shot.

Mariners 10, Indians 7 (10 innings)
Robinson Cano hit a two-out, three-run homer in the 10th inning to lift Seattle over Cleveland.
Cano hit the first pitch thrown to him by Cody Allen over the wall in center field for his sixth home run of the season.

Marlins 5, Nationals 1
Marcell Ozuna’s three-run homer overshadowed another impressive performance by Bryce Harper as Miami defeated Washington to split a four-game series.  Harper extended his RBI streak to eight games by hitting a solo home run to center field in the first inning.
It was his ninth career hit off Marlins right-hander Tom Koehler—and six of them have been homers.
Harper leads the major leagues with 22 RBIs.

Twins 8, Brewers 1
Miguel Sano had three hits and three RBI and Ricky Nolasco went seven innings as Minnesota posted its first road victory of the season.

Rays 12, Red Sox 8
Tampa Bay hammered former team mate David Price, blew a three-run lead and then rallied past Boston. Steven Souza Jr snapped an 8-8 tie with an RBI double in the eighth inning and the Rays protected that latest lead to win the rubber game of the three-game series.

Dodgers 2, Braves 1
Yasmani Grandal delivered an RBI double in the 10th inning to lift Los Angeles past Atlanta after a 10-inning win the previous night.
Enrique Hernandez singled with one out and Grandal, who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the eighth, followed with a two-base hit to the fence in left-center field off Alexi Ogando.

Angels 3, White Sox 2
Mike Trout’s offensive revival continued with a two-run homer as Los Angeles salvaged a series split with Chicago.
Trout, now 5-for-6 in his last two games, broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning of the series finale. He finished the game 2-for-2, scored once, walked twice and two RBI.

Diamondbacks 6, Giants 2
Paul Goldschmidt had two hits and two RBIs, Yasmani Tomas hit his third home run of the season and reliever Tyler Wagner pitched five scoreless innings for his first career win as Arizona beat San Francisco.
The Diamondbacks have won five straight and seven of eight after completing a four-game sweep of the Giants to move one game above .500 for the first time this year.

Rangers 7, Astros 4
Texas completed a three-game sweep of Houston, earning its fourth straight win overall.
Ian Desmond hit a three-run homer off Dallas Keuchel to put the Rangers up for good at 3-1. Texas tacked on another run in the second on an RBI grounder from Delino DeShields and then pushed the lead to 5-1 on an Elvis Andrus triple in the third.
Houston got a run back in the fourth against A.J. Griffin on a homer from Colby Rasmus, but the Rangers kept scoring against Keuchel.

Pirates 11, Padres 1
Gerrit Cole tossed six scoreless innings to lead Pittsburgh past San Diego.
Cole (1-2) allowed four hits, did not walk a batter and struck out seven as he dominated the Padres to avert a three-game sweep.
