AZF’s KAS Eupen on verge of history

Aspire Zone Foundation-owned KAS Eupen retained top spot in the Belgian Second Division after a thrilling 4-1 win over Geel on Sunday. The win puts KAS Eupen as joint league leaders in the division with Royal Antwerp FC. Both the teams have 61 points this season. The two teams will face one another in a winner-takes-all contest on Saturday.
KAS Eupen stole the show during the game with a brace from French striker Thierry Florian Taulemesse, a first league goal for the season from Nigerian midfielder Anthony Bassey and a penalty kick converted by Spanish attacker Jose Maria Cases – all of which overpowered Geel and led KAS Eupen to the win. Geel was only able to score one goal, courtesy of German defender Peter Hackenberg.
Qatar International professional player Akram Hassan Afif was absent due red card on the first game and he will be present on the decisive match this coming Saturday against immediate rival Antwerp, meanwhile his team mate Fahad Abdulrahman Shnin was associated in the match against Geel.
On the same evening, Royal Antwerp FC missed the chance to take a three-point lead at the top of the league table after a 2-1 loss to Union Saint-Gilloise. Royal White Star Bruxelles beat Coxyde 5-0 to move onto 60 points and set up an intriguing final day of matches.
The last day of the season is loaded with possibilities and probabilities with three teams still in the running to win the title and secure the sole promotion to Belgium Pro League. KAS Eupen currently leads on goal difference over Royal Antwerp FC and should these two play out a draw, and Royal White Star Bruxelles collect all three points against already relegated Patro Eisden Maasmechelen, the latter will be promoted and crowned league champions.
To add to the intrigue, this is the last season under the name Second Division. Starting from next season the league will be known as First Division B, following reforms in the Belgian league system. The champions will be promoted and nine teams will be relegated to the third division named Amateur First Division or Amateur Superleague, while no teams will be promoted from the lower division.
KAS Eupen will need to do what they could not do at home the last time the sides met last December at Stadion am Kehrweg, where the team found itself playing catch up until it eventually lost the title in the 76th minute, following a goal from the visiting team.
The Bosuilstadion in the Belgian city of Deurne will witness Royal Antwerp FC and KAS Eupen battle it out over the championship title. All matches on Saturday will kick off at 10pm (Qatar time).
