As it turns out, cooler heads will not prevail in Tom Brady's ongoing battle with the NFL over Deflategate.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday that the NFL is unwilling to engage in any settlement talks with Brady, citing a league source.
According to Schefter, the "NFL believes neither NFLPA nor anyone from Brady's camp has provided any rationale for settlement discussions. The league believes the time for those talks has come and gone, after the two sides had discussed a settlement last summer."
When the two parties were engaging in settlement talks, the discussions got nowhere as Brady has never been willing to admit any guilt. When the Deflategate allegations came up in January 2015, Brady immediately told his Patriots teammates, in a team meeting, that he didn't do it. According to several reports, Brady is planning on fighting the suspension in some form or fashion.
For Brady, his options are limited after two of three New York judges ruled to reinstate his four-game suspension this week. Brady and his legal team can appeal and ask the entire Second Circuit (all 22 judges) to re-hear the case. The other option is to appeal to the US Supreme Court.
MANZIEL ORDERED TO APPEAR IN DALLAS COURT
Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was ordered to appear in a Dallas court May 5 and the judge set bond at $1,500 on a misdemeanor assault charge. Manziel was formally indicted by a Dallas County grand jury on Tuesday. The misdemeanor domestic violence charge carries a maximum of one year incarceration and a $4,000 fine.
NO DECISION ON TRADING KAEPERNICK YET
The San Francisco 49ers have not ruled out trading quarterback Colin Kaepernick this week even though recent trade talks with other teams cooled.
A few weeks ago, the 49ers were getting closer to trading Kaepernick to the Denver Broncos. But the 49ers, Broncos and Kaepernick could not agree on who would pay the quarterback’s $11.9 million guaranteed salary for the 2016 season.
“I wouldn’t say we are out there looking for it, but I wouldn’t rule it out,” 49ers general manager Trent Baalke told ESPN on Wednesday.
EAGLES SIGN KELLY: REPORT
The Philadelphia Eagles signed veteran offensive lineman Dennis Kelly to a one-year contract extension through 2017, according to reports.
ESPN reported the extension adds $880,000 of new money to Kelly’s deal. Kelly, 26, was set to enter the final year of his current contract, which will pay him a base salary of $760,000 this season.
