Frye, Cavs shoot down Hawks, Leonard shines as Spurs edge Thunder

The Atlanta Hawks made adjustments but still couldn’t stop the Cleveland Cavaliers from putting on another masterful three-point shooting show.
Channing Frye hit seven triples en route to a career playoff-high 27 points off the bench and the Cavs rallied for a 121-108 road victory Friday to take a commanding 3-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.
“I know I have to go out there and do my job,” said Frye, who came over from Orlando in a mid-season trade. “Tonight, I got the opportunity, my teammates gave me the rock and I went a little bit crazy with it.”
“That’s why we brought him in, to shoot, and shoot and shoot.” said teammate LeBron James, who finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists. “And he did exactly that.”
The Cavs followed up Tuesday’s NBA-record 25 triples hitting 21-of-39, to set up a potential sweep of the Hawks on Sunday, with history on their side. No team has ever lost a series after leading 3-0.
“We’re just trying to close the series out,” James said. “We’re a team destined for greatness. We have another mission and another chapter in our goal on Sunday.”
Kyrie Irving also netted 24 points while Kevin Love finished with 21 and 15 rebounds for the top-seeded Cavs, who outscored their hosts 36-17 hosts in the decisive fourth quarter.
“Throughout the course of game we knew they were going to give us everything they had,” James said. “We had to make adjustments and were able to do that.”
Trailing by as many as 11 early and 103-99, James re-entered the contest at the 7:41 mark and the Cavs took charge. “King” James scored seven quick points, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 6:23 remaining to trigger a decisive 22-5 closing run that included triples by Frye and Love.
“When we brought LeBron back it was a total team effort,” Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said. “Knowing the way the game was going in the fourth quarter, we made adjustments to what we wanted to do. That allowed us to get out in transition for easy baskets and we got stops.”
Al Horford scored 24 points, Jeff Teague had 19 with 14 assists, while Kyle Korver netted 18 with five triples for the Hawks, who look to stave off elimination. “We’re fighting for our playoff lives,” Horford said.
“At this point, we have to do some changes, because what we’ve done hasn’t worked.”
Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer changed his starting lineup replacing struggling sharpshooter Korver for defensive-minded Thabo Sefolosha.  It seemed to settle Korver down.
The Hawks caught fire, closing second quarter on a furious 20-5 run to take a 63-55 halftime advantage.
Paul Millsap poured in 13 of his 17 points in the third quarter and the Hawks carried a 91-85 lead into the final frame before the Cavs rallied.
Elsewhere
San Antonio Spurs 100, Oklahoma City Thunder 96: Kawhi Leonard scored 31 points, including two free throws with 2.7 seconds left along with 11 rebounds, and the visiting Spurs edged the Thunder to grab a 2-1 lead in their Western Conference semi-final tie.
LaMarcus Aldridge tossed in 24 points, and Frenchman Tony Parker added 19 for the second-seeded Spurs, who made 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch to recapture home-court advantage after losing controversial Game 2. Game 4 will be Sunday in Oklahoma City.
“We want to win game 4,” Parker said. “We are focused and have goals.”
Russell Westbrook collected 31 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the third-seeded Thunder, while Kevin Durant finished with 26 points.
Oklahoma City erased an early 15-point deficit and led 81-77 with seven minutes left but couldn’t hold it and trailed 91-89 with 3:19 left.
The gap grew to 96-89 on a David West basket with 1:19 remaining following costly turnovers by Westbook and Durant at the other end.
Westbrook ran of five consecutive points to draw the Thunder within 96-94. Parker made two free throws but a runner by Dion Waiters cut the Spurs’ lead to 98-96 with 4.5 seconds remaining before Leonard’s tosses clinched the win.
