Forecast for windy, dusty conditions in coming days

Another spell of strong winds, dust and poor visibility is expected in the country in the coming days, with these conditions reaching their peak on Saturday and Sunday, the Qatar Met department has said.

It is also likely to get hotter on Thursday and Friday, with the maximum temperature rising to the mid-40s, before dropping to the high-30s over most areas on Saturday and Sunday due to northerly winds, according to the weather report.

In a report, the Met department said an extension of a high-pressure ridge was expected to affect the country between Friday evening and Monday evening (May 23), accompanied by fresh to strong northwesterly winds.

The wind speed is likely to increase gradually, reaching its peak on Saturday and Sunday, when it will range between 18 and 28 knots, going up to 35 knots at times. This will result in blowing dust and poor visibility, which may drop to 2km or less in some areas, according to the report.

Sea warnings will also be in effect for strong winds and high waves, measuring 5-10ft.

In view of the expected conditions and following consultations with the Ministry of Public Health, the Met department has urged people – especially the elderly, asthma patients or those who have chest allergies - to avoid direct contact with dust and check with the nearest health centre if they feel any symptoms of chest allergies or breathing difficulties. In addition, it has advised motorists to keep their vehicles’ windows closed during windy and dusty conditions.
