Girls again outshine boys in 10th exams

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) yesterday announced the Class 10 results of all 10 regions with girls again performing better than boys.
Thiruvananthapuram recorded the highest pass percentage with 99.87.
The pass percentage of girls stood at 96.36 compared with boys at 96.11, the CBSE said in a statement.
Over 1.4mn students appeared for the examination that held between March 1 and 28.
This year saw an increase of 8.5% in candidates’ registration.
According to the CBSE, 96.21% students cleared the exam this year.
In Manipal meanwhile, 73 of the 323 government schools have a pass percentage of zero in the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) or the Class 10 examination.
There was not a single student in these schools who passed the HSLC examination held from March 1 to 19 by the Board of Secondary Education Manipur (BSEM).
There are 28 government schools that had just one student each who passed the exam. And there is not a single government school that has a student in top 20 achievers.
“The government has taken a serious note of the non-performance of government schools. The only way out is to abolish some of these schools, so that students could get admission in private schools,” sources said.
The situation has been steadily worsening year after year, according to official reports.
Officials of the education department declined to explain the failure of some of the government schools to have a single successful student.
The government’s solution to the problem has been to close down non-performing schools.
