Scorcher expected in Qatar on Sunday, Monday

Scorching conditions are expected in Qatar on Sunday and Monday before another spell of strong winds and dust, which will reach its peak on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the weather forecast.

The Qatar Met department has also issued a warning for strong winds and high waves, measuring 6-10ft, in offshore areas with effect from Sunday night.
The maximum temperature is expected to hover around the mid-40C mark until Monday before dropping to the upper-30C levels in most areas on Tuesday and Wednesday due to the influence of northerly winds.
On Saturday, the mercury level reached a high of 46C at a number of places in Qatar, including Sheehaniya, Jumayliyah and Turayna. Data provided by the weather office also showed that the maximum temperature was 45C at Abu Hamour, Abu Samra, Ghuwairiyah and other places, and 44C at Qatar University and Dukhan.
In a statement, the Met department said fresh to strong northwesterly winds were again expected to affect the country from Monday until Thursday due to the extension of the Indian monsoon trough, along with a high-pressure ridge, over the northern Arabian Peninsula.
The wind speed is expected to strengthen gradually and reach its peak on Tuesday and Wednesday, when it will range from 18-28 knots and go up to 35 knots at times. This will result in blowing dust and poor visibility, which may drop to 2km or less in some areas.
The Met department has urged people to remain cautious and avoid sea activities during the period of strong winds.
The forecast for inshore areas on Sunday is that it will be “hot to very hot” during the day and slight dust is also expected.
The wind speed in offshore areas may reach 23 knots by Sunday night with the sea level rising to 7ft. Slightly dusty conditions are also expected in these areas.
The maximum temperature is expected to be 44C in Doha, 42C in Messaied, Wakrah and Abu Samra, 40C in Al Khor and Dukhan and 34C in Al Ruwais.
The Met department has advised people to follow latest weather updates through its official website, smartphone applications and various social media accounts.
