A Doha Criminal Court has awarded a one-year jail term, suspended over a period of three years starting from the date of the final verdict, to a student for stealing a car.
According to local Arabic daily Arrayah, the owner of the car was at The Pearl-Qatar when the incident occurred.
The owner told the court that he saw a crowd on the road and got out of the vehicle, leaving its engine running, to see what was going on. He saw a number of youngsters fighting there and one of those involved suddenly ran towards the car and sped off.
The victim reported the matter to the police, who managed to spot the defendant and the vehicle beside a hotel an hour later.
The sentence was awarded after taking into consideration the defendant's clean record and also the fact that the victim had dropped his claims, the daily said.
