Qatar Development Fund (QDF) yesterday signed a $5mn agreement with Turkey’s Humanitarian Pooled Fund (HPF) in the presence of HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, the Foreign Minister and QDF Chairman.
The agreement was signed by QDF General-Director, Khalifa bin Jassim al-Kuwari, and the United Nations’ Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Co-ordinator, Stephen O’Brien.
Al-Kuwari said that the signing of the agreement to support HPF stressed Qatar and QDF’s keenness to support the Syrian people through humanitarian and development assistance programmes.
He stressed Qatar’s long-term support for Syrian refugees in difficult times while QDF continues to back thousands of them through financing humanitarian operations and providing assistance to those affected by the ongoing crisis in Syria.
For his part, O’Brien called on the international community to follow in the footsteps of Qatar and provide assistance for humanitarian operations in Syria, pointing out that such contributions could save the Syrians’ lives, in particular women and children.
O’Brien thanked Qatar and QDF for their generous contributions and efforts in alleviating the suffering of those affected in all parts of the world.
