The General Authority of Customs (GAC) arrested an Asian national attempting to smuggle gold bars weighing 5kg at the Hamad International Airport.
According to a customs officer the passenger said he had a small quantity of gold and wished to pay the customs duty. However, the man's behaviour raised suspicion and the officer referred the bags to inspectors. A full search revealed the gold bars concealed in secret pockets.
GAC president Ahmed bin Ali al-Mohannadi honoured the officer who made the seizure, lauded his alertness and thanked him for his efforts.
He said customs officers were getting continuous training to enhance their professional performance.
The passenger was referred to the security department and the gold was confiscated.
