New Zealand’s shot put queen Valerie Adams continued to put last year’s injury woes behind her with a dominant victory in yesterday’s Diamond League meet in Rome.
Following up on her win in Rabat last week, Adams threw a season’s best of 19.69 metres on her third attempt in a consistent display at the Stadio Olimpico.
Her winning distance was 71cm ahead of Anita Marton of Hungary.
“I guess this year I am more motivated than ever,” said Adams, the four-time world outdoor champion, three-time world indoor champion and two-time Olympic gold medallist.
“2016 is an Olympic year. It is a great challenge, a great year. Last year was really tough for me,” the 31-year-old said in reference to knee surgery that put paid to her injury-bedevilled 2015 season.
She added: “I was really good today. I am a lot more consistent than I have been in the past.
“The competition was good. I will take the win but I do not think in terms of being the Diamond Race leader, what I need is to get competitions under my belt.
“Training, keep building from there and come out and have fun. This is my fourth Olympics!”
