Egypt’s Omar Abdel Fattah dominated the second Qatar Open Kiteboarding Championship to win two of the races and finished second in the third one. Fattah clinched the Formula and TwinTip (TT) races and came second in the freestyle event as Qatar’s Alaa Festok finished second in the Formula race.
In the Formula race, the Egyptian finished with a nett score of ten pushing Qatar’s Festok in the second position, the local sailor with a nett score of 31 points defeated Jakub Szczesny of Poland to the third place. In Twin Tip section, Fattah overcame the challenge of the UAE duo of Mohamed al-Farsi (15) and Mohamed al-Mansoori (16) to clinch the top place.
Qatar’s Fahad al-Malki, who began the day one of the championship on Friday on a promising note in the TT, could not maintain the same level of the momentum and had to contend with the fourth place.
Another local competitor, Faris al-Bakri finished eight. In the Freestyle, al-Mansoori prevented Fattah from making a clean sweep, finishing on the top ahead of the Egyptian. Salem al-Suwaidi of UAE came third.
More than 30 competitors from nine countries took part in the championship organised by the Qatar Sailing & Marine Sports Federation. Sailors from Egypt, Brazil, UK, Uzbekistan, South Africa, Qatar, Poland, Germany and Canada took part in the championship.
The podium winners were handed over their medals and prizes by Qatar Sailing & Marine Sports Federation president Khalifa al-Sewaidi in the presence of President of UAE Kitesurfing Association Sheikh Ahmad bin Hamdan al-Nahyan.0
