Doha: Qatar’s Idriss ousa Youssouf missed out on a gold medal once again and had to settle for sliver in 800m at the 17th Asian Junior Athletics Championships at Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam yesterday. Youssouf had clinched a silver medal in the 1,500m on Saturday. Yesterday, the Qatari middle-distance runner came second in the 800m as he clocked 1:52.28 seconds behind the winner Jacob Pa Amoj from India.
Amoj provided a strong kick in the closing metres of the close race and managed to win it in 1:51.82. Iraq’s Mohammed Raheem Albzaznah pocketed the bronze medal with a time of 1:52.78secs.
With Youssouf’s another medal, Qatar finished in the eighth spot in the medals tally with two gold and as many silver medals.
Japan topped the medals table with 13-10-4 figures and China followed them with 22 medals, including 11 gold and 7 silver.
India also produced a fine performance and were third, securing seven gold, four silver and six bronze medals.
Malaysia had three gold and as many silver in their seven-medal haul, while Chinese Taipei completed the top five with 2-3-4 figures, the same by Thailand.
Hosts Vietnam finished ahead of Qatar with their athletes clinching two gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Iraq (1-2-3) and South Korea (1-0-2) were placed ninth and tenth, respectively, in the medals list.
In all, 17 countries won one or more medals in the five-day championships, with Kyrgyzstan and Pakistan getting one bronze medal apiece.
