Residents should heed the message

Dear Sir,

Kahramaa regularly runs campaigns to save water and electricity, winning praise for its initiative.
Most electricity used in homes in Qatar comes from the burning of fossil fuels.
These fuels are needed to power the turbines that produce electricity.
These resources are not unlimited or renewable; the faster they are used and the more electricity that is consumed, the quicker they will be depleted.
Water conservation is also quite important.
Considering that every single person on the planet needs water to survive, it seems strange that many of us would have no problem leaving the tap water running.
That is why Kahramaa’s campaigns assume much importance.
But it is sad to note many people are not paying any heed to these campaigns and wantonly waste these precious resources.
Private swimming pools and inflatable tubs need to be curbed in Qatar to save water.
Many of us live in houses which have bathtubs.
But taking a shower instead of a bath should save a good bit of water.
The authorities are taking lots of steps to spread the message about water and electricity conservation but it’s us who should act up on the directions given to us.
The authorities can make rules or impose fines but full co-operation from residents is the key to the success of the “save water and electricity” campaign.

A day for environment

Dear Sir,

World Environment Day was observed on June 5 to raise global awareness to take positive action to protect nature and the planet Earth.
Deforestation and water and air pollution have already taken a heavy toll on our environment. Meanwhile, rising pollution levels in many cities are causing increasing concern. Foul air in urban areas causes respiratory ailments in many people.
Some Asian nations face severe water shortages as the underground water table has gone very low.
This year’s World Environment Day’s theme, “Go Wild for Life (Zero tolerance for the illegal trade in wildlife)”, sought to encourage conservation of all those species under threat and called for taking action to help safeguard them for future generations.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of United Nations Conference on the Human Environment 1972 which began in Stockholm. The first World Environment Day was observed in 1973 and since then it is being held every year with  different themes.
