A fire that broke out in a compound in the city's Najma area created panic among the residents of the neighbourhood a little before noon.
Inquiries made in the affected area found it was the second time in a little over six months that a fire had broken out in the compound where there was a huge pile of old furniture, tyres and many other discarded items .
After the blaze was noticed, the civil defence was alerted and their swift arrival helped in putting out the flames in a very short time.
Residents of the area told this newspaper that a large number of used items, including mini cycles had perished in a fire in the same compound last November. Some of them said the occupants of the compound continued to store old goods even after repeated warnings from the municipal and civil defence authorities.
