Blood donors at HMC centre top 144,800

The Blood Donor Centre at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has registered a total of 144,805 donors, including 42,065 Qataris, from January 2002 to February 2016.
Qatar has also met 100% blood sufficiency for the sixth consecutive year with the largest number of voluntary blood donors in the region.
Males constituted 96% (26,108) of the blood donors in 2015 and the female blood donors were 1,065 with the total number of donors in 2015 amounting to 27,203, HMC statistics show.
The centre also organised 367 mobile campaigns in 2015.
The Blood Donor Centre organised an event on Tuesday to honour the individuals, companies and community groups who supported the centre last year.
The event, held under the patronage of HE the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari, coincided with World Blood Donor Day, observed worldwide on June14.
More than 200 individual donors were honoured at the event, including 40 platelet donors, 20 female donors and 140 donors who donated whole blood products for patients in need.
The event also honoured corporate and government supporters and sponsors of HMC’s blood donation efforts including Alfardan Group, QatarGas, Qatar Petrochemical Company, the Social and Sport Contribution Fund and Qatar National Bank.

Dr Salih Ali al-Marri presenting a memento to one of the sponsors of the programme.

Dr Salih Ali al-Marri, of the Ministry of Public Health, said such events shed light on the importance of blood donation, which helps save many lives in Qatar every year and there is always demand for blood and blood products.
“Blood donation is a selfless act and it’s important that we take the time to recognise those in our community who display this generosity,” he stated.
Ali al-Janahi, chief, business services at HMC, said: “It is a result of widespread public support for blood donation and recognition of its importance. Voluntary blood donation gives patients with life-threatening diseases who are in need of a blood transfusion a chance to live longer and improve the quality of their lives.”
The Blood Donor Centre is supported by HMC’s Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, whose efforts were also recognised at the event.
Dr Ajayeb al-Nabet al-Marri, chairperson of the Department of Laboratory, Medicine and Pathology at HMC, said, “We will continue to play a vital role in nurturing the culture of blood donation in the community to ensure we meet the need for blood and blood products from all the hospitals and medical facilities in Qatar.”
