Abdulrahman, Luiz thrill fans in Ramadan tourney

United Arab Emirates (UAE) playmaker Omar Abdulrahman and Brazil centre-back David Luiz had more to share than a love of spectacular hairstyles with both coming together in a recent Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC)-partnered Ramadan tournament in Kuwait.
Abdulrahman, one of the brightest stars of last year’s AFC Asian Cup, and Luiz, a UEFA Champions League winner in 2011-12, enchanted local fans in this year’s Al Roudan Football Tournament, which has High Highness the Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah as its patron.
Abdulrahman, the inspiration behind the UAE’s semi-final appearance in last year’s AFC Asian Cup, is flying the GCC flag at the tournament.
Paris Saint-Germain defender Luiz, meanwhile, provides the universally loved Brazilian flavour this year.
Both Abdulrahman and Luiz spoke to www.sc.qa about Qatar hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
“I am proud that Qatar is hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” said Abdulrahman.
“I am sure Qatar will host a great World Cup in 2022,” said Luiz. “I have been to the country many times and have been impressed by its facilities and organisational capabilities. It is good that preparations for the tournament have started well in advance.”
The annual tournament, in its 37th edition and widely considered one of the biggest Ramadan tournaments in the GCC region, has consistently been the platform for Asian and international stars to showcase their skills in Kuwait. Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro Del Piero, Dani Alves and Diego Costa are just some of the notable international players who have featured in previous editions.
Legendary Italian full-back Paolo Maldini and Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal are expected to join this year’s tournament at a later stage. The five-a-side tournament, which attracts in excess of 70,000 fans across its 28-day duration, is broadcast live on Kuwaiti television. This year, 40 teams divided into 10 groups are competing for the spoils.
A junior tournament for the 8-12 age-group, with 80 participating teams, is also held concurrently to develop local football skills. The tournament aims to promote young Kuwaiti professional footballers and provide a vibrant atmosphere during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
