Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir left Qatar yesterday after a two-day visit.
Bidding the president farewell at Hamad International Airport were HE the Minister of Finance Ali Sherif al-Emadi and Qatar’s ambassador in Khartoum, Rashid Abdulrahman al-Nuaimi, and Sudanese charges d’affaires in Doha, Hussain Mohamed Hussain Mosa.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Prof Ibrahim Ghandour described the president’s visit as “successful”.
The minister said the visit aimed “to co-ordinate the two countries’ positions regarding issues of joint interest and pursue the already distinguished bilateral relations”.
Speaking to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the minister said that al-Bashir’s visit and talks with HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani were a reflection of the strong bilateral ties. “Those ties were abundantly clear in Qatar’s support to Sudan.
According to al-Ghandour, the Sudanese president’s meeting with HH the Emir covered all regional issues of joint interest. The two leaders discussed ways to unite Arab countries in light of the challenges facing the region. HH the Emir and the president agreed to hold a consultative committee meeting at the ministerial level at a later date.
The visit saw also other meetings between the foreign ministers and finance ministers of both countries. The meetings discussed ways to enhance bilateral co-operation further.
Al-Ghandour reserved special praise for Qatar’s role in establishing peace in Darfur. He highlighted in particular HH the Emir’s role.
He said the Doha Document for Peace had already seen two of its resolutions being fully-implemented. They were holding an administrative referendum for Darfur and clearing the region from all armed groups. The foreign minister also thanked HE Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud for his role in brokering peace in the region.
