War criminal and death row convict Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mir Quasem Ali was shifted to Dhaka Central Jail from Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur yesterday morning.
Law enforcers along with Quasem left Gazipur north of Dhaka city for the capital from Kashimpur Jail at around 7.15am, said jail superintendent Prosanto Kumar Banik.
All the war criminals awarded death sentence were earlier transferred from Kashimpur Jail to high-security Dhaka prison just before execution. There are arrangements in the central jail for hanging the convicts.
On June 6, the Supreme Court released the full text of its verdict upholding the death penalty of war crimes convict Ali for the crimes against humanity he committed during the 1971 Liberation War.
Earlier on March 8, the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty for Ali for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 in a verdict had sentenced Ali in the port city of Chittagong in 1971, to death on November 2, 2014.
On November 30, 2014, Ali filed an appeal before the Supreme Court challenging the death penalty.
Top Jamaat-e-Islami financier Quasem, now 64, was president of the Chittagong town unit of the Islami Chhatra Sangha, student wing of Jamaat, till November 6, 1971.
He was then made general secretary of the East Pakistan Chhatra Sangha.
Meanwhile, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) yesterday framed three specific charges against four people for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War in Sudharampur sub-district of Noakhali district.
The three-member panel of the tribunal, headed by Justice Anwarul Haque, took cognizance of the charges and framed the charges.
The tribunal also fixed August 7 for starting the prosecution’s introductory speech in the cases.
The four accused are Amir Ahmed alias Amir Ali Razakar, Abul Kalam alias AKM Mansur, Joynul Abedin and Abdul Kuddus.
Of them, Abul Kalam has been on the run.
The prosecution pressed charges against five people, including the four in the war crimes case.
As another accused of the case, M Yusuf, died after the pressing of the charges, the deceased was not indicted.
The investigators started the probe against the five suspected war criminals on November 16, 2014 and submitted a report before the prosecution on August 31, 2015.
Three charges include killing of over 100 people in Sudarampur sub-district of Noakhali district on June 15, 1971.
