Pak celebrity chef to judge cookery show

Good news for the lovers of Pakistani and South Asian cuisine. One of the biggest celebrity chefs from Pakistan, Chef Gulzar Hussain, is coming to town this month. Followed by millions in Pakistan through his cookery show on a popular food channel, Chef Gulzar will judge the third edition of ‘PWA Cookery Contest 2016’ organised by Pakistan Women’s Association (PWA) Qatar.

PWA president Rahat Mansoor.

The event to be held tomorrow at Doha Marriott Hotel from 9pm to 11pm will feature a cookery challenge where contestants will have to prepare and present Pakistani dishes. The competition will be judged by four members of the jury, besides Chef Gulzar. In one of the segments of the contest, the participants will get a chance to learn different recipes from the man himself. He is generally known for mixing up the ingredients to give his dishes a mouth-watering aroma that spreads the kitchen.
Chef Gulzar has innovated tonnes of recipes in his own distinctive style. He is regarded as one of the most creative celebrity chefs in Pakistan. Gulzar found his true vocation in the culinary world in late 1990s when he left for Japan to train with the Oriental master chefs.
He graduated from Tokyo University and served for three years at the Ginza hotel in the capital city. Hence, his natural tendencies and specialties are more inclined towards the Oriental and the Continental.
Chef Gulzar has long been associated with the private television networks in Pakistan and hosts a live show on the country’s top-rated cooking channel, the Masala TV. Gulzar is a self-styled chef famous for his rich costumes, dramatic get-ups and signature dance moves.
His cooking show, Live@9 with Chef Gulzar always opens with him performing a dance routine. Gulzar has been quoted saying that dancing helps boost his mood and sets the right pace for the show. “Some of my viewers may not like it but then again, that is my style of doing things,” says the celebrity chef.
Masala TV has brought out a best-selling cook book based on Gulzar’s show, broadcast live five days a week. With expertise in Pakistani and Asian cuisines, he produces enticing meals by mixing up the best of the ingredients and furnishing them in a savoury pattern. Gulzar’s show features simple yet delightful recipes which are easy to make.
The theme varies from the local to international cuisine and is based on viewer requests received through e-mails, letters and live calls. Food lovers in Pakistan have been following him for years. His recipes have also crossed borders and are now trending overseas. Born and raised in Karachi, Gulzar is married to a professional chef from Thailand, Rubina Gulzar, and lives in Karachi with his wife and daughter.
PWA president Rahat Mansoor thanked the Gold Sponsor of the event, Punjab Restaurant and support sponsors My Trip, Shan Masala, Nazih Qatar, Malabar Gold & Diamond, Naseem Dental Center and Evian for their support in PWA Cookery Contest 2016.
The event is split into a number of activities like the contest, cooking show and a session directly with Chef Gulzar. The indoor event is exclusively for families with no entrance fee. The visitors will get a chance to learn mouth-watering recipes from Pakistan’s top chef and win amazing prizes during the quiz competitions.
PWA has invited all the families to come forward and participate in the event besides getting an opportunity to meet Chef Gulzar and know more about his delicious cooking recipes. PWA is a fraternity for Pakistani women residing in Qatar and a constructive group recognised for voluntary, community welfare activities in Qatar. The association invites women from all walks of life to join them and become an active part of their regular cultural activities and holds ladies’ get together such as the coffee morning get-together which takes place on the 1st Saturday of each month.
