The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced that the Doha South Sewage Treatment Works Phase II expansion project has won a Meed Quality Award 2016 in the power and water field.

The project was selected from among a number of entrants for the Meed Quality Awards, which are among the most important infrastructure awards programmes at the regional level.
To mark the occasion, the authority organised a celebration to honour the project contractor, a Larsen & Toubro and Galfar Al Misnad joint venture, in the presence of Khaled Saif al-Khayarein, manager of the Drainage Networks Project Department at Ashghal.
During the ceremony, a certificate was presented to the representatives of the contractor for completing 7.7mn man hours without accidents. The contractor achieved this milestone by committing to on-site health and safety standards that are adopted by Ashghal across all its projects, according to a statement from the authority.
The Doha South Sewage Treatment Works, completed at the beginning of this year, is one of the most prominent treatment plants in the country with a capacity to treat 241mn litres of sewage water per day, Ashghal has said.
The Phase II expansion implemented at the plant included the construction of three electricity substations, six pump houses, one stormwater lagoon and one treated sewage effluent lagoon. Water treatment operations are run through a network of 15km of plant piping.
There has been “complete commitment” to health and safety standards on site, which Ashghal makes sure that all contractors abide by, throughout the implementation of the project. These standards include training workers and protecting them against health hazards that may arise while working in a live sewage treatment plant.
The contractor achieved a milestone in terms of safety, especially that the works involved hazards posed by the work environment and the nature of the project, the statement noted.
