Ministry of Interior advisory for road trips

Ministry issues tips for road trips ahead of holidays

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has issued an advisory for road trips ahead of the holiday season.

Many people travel by road during the holidays and the tips offered by the ministry cover key aspects such as documents, the condition of vehicles and safe driving practices.

The advisory posted on the MoI's Facebook page urges travellers to confirm the validity of official documents that they will carry during the trip, such as the driver's licence, car ownership card and passport, and keep them in a safe place while travelling.

Travellers should also ensure the capacity of their vehicle by getting a comprehensive technical test done before starting the trip, the MoI said. “Check the validity and safety standard of your vehicle’s tyres and replace them if needed,” it added.

Overloading a vehicle can be dangerous for travellers and also threaten the lives of others. “It also leads to disruption of the vehicle and accidents, and impedes the driver's vision and freedom of movement,” the advisory noted.

The ministry further advised that motorists keep enough distance between their car and the vehicle in front, stick to the speed limit and fasten the seatbelt.

“If you feel drowsy, immediately stop your vehicle and proceed your journey only after giving yourself some rest. Then, continue your travel peacefully and safely and avoid driving during the late hours of the night as much as possible,” according to the advisory.
