Windy conditions expected on Saturday and Sunday

Strong winds are expected in most parts of the country this coming Saturday and Sunday, the Qatar Met department has said.

The weather office has also issued a warning for offshore areas during this period.

In a report, the Met department said “fresh to strong northwesterly winds were expected to affect most areas of the country during (the) daytime on Saturday and Sunday (July 2-3)” due to an extension of the “Indian monsoon seasonal low” over the region.

The wind speed will range from 15-25 knots, going up to 35 knots at times over some areas. This, in turn, will result in blowing dust and a drop in visibility - to 3km or less - in some places at times.

Besides, the sea level is also expected to rise, ranging from 6-9ft.

The Met department has urged people to remain cautious and avoid venturing into the sea during the period of strong winds.

Meanwhile, the forecast for inshore areas today says it will be hazy to misty in some places at first, followed by a hot day with slight dust and some clouds. It will be relatively humid by night.

Offshore areas are likely to see hazy to misty conditions in some places towards the early hours as well as some clouds.

Visibility will drop to 2km or less in some areas at first.

Yesterday, the highest temperature recorded in the country was 48C in Shehaimiya (northwest Qatar), followed by 46C in Jumayliyah and 45C in Sheehaniya and other places. In the capital, a highest temperature of 41C was recorded in the Qatar University area.

A maximum temperature of 43C has been forecast in Abu Samra today, while the mercury level is expected to touch 42C in Doha and Dukhan.
