Over 100,000 people have been affected by floods in seven districts of the northeastern state of Assam in the last few days, an official said yesterday.
A total of 112,307 people in 213 villages of Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Golaghat, Morigaon, Biswanath, Barpeta and Jorhat districts were marooned by floods till late Friday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority official said.
The situation may get worse in the coming days as the state meteorological department has predicted more rains for Assam and other northeastern states.
“The situation is worse in Jorhat, Golaghat and Lakhimpur districts where the district administrations have opened six relief camps, housing over a thousand affected people,” the official said.
The district administrations have been asked to send relief material to the affected areas, the official said.
There were reports of flash floods inundating villages and croplands.
According to the government, over 6,900 hectares of land with standing crops have been affected by floods in the state.
The Brahmaputra river was flowing above the danger level at Neematighat in Jorhat district and in Dhubri district.
The Dikhow river was also flowing above the danger level at Sivsagar and the Dhansiri river was flowing above the danger level at Golaghat and Numaligarh.
Besides, there were reports of massive erosion in Majuli river island.
In Jorhat, the district administration called in the army to help carry out rescue operations.
The surging waters have reached embankments in the district causing more worries for the people.
l Meanwhile in the southern state of Karnataka, heavy rains will occur in the coastal districts, south interior and central areas in the next 24 hours as the monsoon remains vigorous, the weather office said .
“Heavy and widespread rains will lash Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts on the west coast and moderate in southern districts and the Western Ghats in Malnad region,” said a weather official.
Strong winds from westerly direction, with speed reaching 45-55kmph will blow along and off the coast.
Forecast for Bengaluru and neaby ares till today is cloudy sky, with one or two spells of light rain.
“Surface winds, however, will be strong and gusty at times while maximum and minimum temperatures will be 27 and 20 degree Celsius,” the official said.
Rainfall occurred at most places on Friday in the coastal region, at many places in south interior and at a few places over north interior areas of the state.
Mangaluru recorded 4cm rain, fallowed by 3cm each at Mudubidre, Mani, Dharmasthala and Udupi and 2 each at Puttur, Karkala, Kundapur, Madapura, Jayapura and Sakleshpura in Hassan district.
