Al Meera has donated over QR300,000, collected through cashier points at the retail group’s outlets, to Qatar Charity (QC).
The sum includes around QR75,000 donated in the form of coins (25 and 50 dirhams) by customers so far this year and QR230,000 given by
shoppers in 2015.
The money raised through the dirham donation service, carried out through cashier points at 41 Al Meera branches in Qatar, will support QC in implementing community development projects at home and abroad,
according to a statement.
The donation comes as part of a wider contribution programme facilitated by a series of agreements entered into by QC since 2012 with malls, allowing the donation of small change by shoppers while making purchases. The donated coins are added to customer bills and accredited to the QC account later.
Ali Atiq al-Abdullah, executive director for local development at QC, said the project highlighted the impact of donations,
even if it was a small one.
The money collected since the activation of the service is a large sum that will help implement projects that support the needy and poor families, it is observed.
He praised and thanked Al Meera for its support and contributions to QC towards humanitarian and charitable work. Last Ramadan, Al Meera provided six additional sites to QC for
donation collection desks.
Dr Mohamed Nasser al-Qahtani, deputy CEO of Al Meera, said: “Our partnership with Qatar Charity is of much interest to us as we believe that the most important thing for various institutions is to recognise the deep need for synergies between them in order to spread innovative giving concepts.”
Donors can contribute to the project at different Al Meera branches by asking the cashiers to add a donation with the change value to their bills. Donations made at all sale points are collected and transferred by the end of each month to QC.
Qatar Charity has signed several similar agreements with banks, companies and institutions for community development and charitable projects.
